A small tunnel or shaft excavated in advance of the main drivage in mining and tunnel building to gain information aboutthe ground, create a free face, and thus simplify the blasting operations. It is tunnel excavated over the entire length or over part of a larger tunnel, to explore ground conditions and/or to assist in final excavation. May also be referred to as "pilotdrift"
