Oil based Cutting Fluids:

1) Soluble Oils:

They are emulsions composed of around 80% water, soap and mineral oil. The water provides cooling effect and oil provides the lubricating property.

2) Straight oils:

Such as petroleum and fatty oils like animal, vegetable, lard oil etc. they have both cooling and lubricating properties and are used in light machining operations.

3) Mixed Oils:

This is a mixture of petroleum and fatty oils. The blend makes an excellent coolant and lubricant for automatic screw machine and other light machining operations where accuracy and good finish are of prime importance.

4) Chemical-additive oil:

Oils mixed with sulphur or chlorine are known as chemical additive oil. sulphurised oil is used for machining tough low carbon steels.

5) Solid Lubricants:

Wax sticks and bar soaps are sometimes used as a convenient means of applying lubrication to the cutting tool.
