A saturated soil sample has a liquid limit of 20% and plastic limit 12%. The following data are also available from sieve analysis.
Sieve Size (mm) % Passing
2.12 100
0.425 85
0.075 38

  1. since less than 38% of soil is passing 75$\mu$ sieve, it is a course grained soil.
  2. => % retained on 75 $\mu$ = 100 - 38 = 62%

    since % retained on 2.12 is mil, the coarse fraction does not contain any gravel i.e. it contains only sand (S).

  3. PI = 20 - 12 = 8

    For $W_L$ = 20, y-co-ordinate of 'A' line of plasticity chart = 0.
