A layer of sand 8 m thick lies over the layer of clay. The water table is at a depth of 1 m below ground surface, above the water table , the band is saturated with capillary moisture.

The saturated unit weight of sand is 20k N/m2 and dry unit weight is 17k N/m2. Plot the total stress, neutral stress and effective stress at a depth of 8 m below the ground level.

Total Stress :

enter image description here

Total Stress :–

At A, σ = 0

At B, σ = 17 X 1 = 17k N/m2

At C, σ = 17 + 20 X 7 = 140k N/m2 + 17k N/m2 = 157k N/m2

Pore Pressure / Neutral Pressure :–

At A, u = 0

At B, u = 0

At C, u = 9.81 X 7 = 68.67

Effective Pressure :–

At A, σ ’ = 0

At B, σ ’ = σ – (+u) = 17 – (0) = 17k N/m2

At C, σ ’ = σ – u = 157 – 68.67 = 81.33 k N/m2
