  • The ease with which machining of given material can be done called machinability.

  • Parameters which affects the machinability of material.

1) Physical and mechanical properties of material

2) Chemical composition

3) Cutting conditions

  • Machinability can be evaluated by knowing following parameters.

1. Specific cutting energy :

Lower the specific cutting energy required for machining implies better machining of work piece.

Specific cutting energy $\downarrow$ Machinability $\uparrow$

2. Tool Life :

Longer tool life at given cutting speed indicates good machinability.

Tool Life $\uparrow$ Machinability $\uparrow$

3. Surface Finish :

Better is surface finish, higher is Machinability

surface finish $\uparrow$ Machinability $\uparrow$

4. Forces and power consumption :

Lower the forces and power consumption better will be machining.

Forces and power consumption $\downarrow$ Machining $\uparrow$

5. Shear angle :

Lower the shear angle better the machinability.

Shear angle $\downarrow$ Machinability $\uparrow$

6. Cutting Force :

Lesser the cutting force for removing the higher volume of metal, higher will be machining ability.

cutting force $\downarrow$ Machinability $\uparrow$

7. Material removal rate :

Under the similar conditions of machining, Higher the MRR, Better the machining of workpiece.

MRR $\uparrow$ Machinability $\uparrow$
