The three scenarios that require event correlation techniques are

  1. Detecting and filtering of events

  2. correlating observed events to isolate and localize the fault either topologically or functionally

  3. Identifying the cause of problem.

All have intelligence or reasoning behind the methods.

The six techniques are

  • a) Rule based reasonings.

  • b) Model based reasonings.

  • c) case based reasonings.

  • d) code look.

  • e) state transition graph model.

  • f) finite state machine model.

1) Rule based reasoning - has knowledge here, working memory and an interference engine i.e. knowledge level, data level and control level.

2) Model based reasoning - A model is a representation of components it models. the model in traditional object oriented representation has attributes, relations to other models and behaviour.

3) Case based reasoning - This uses the knowledge gained before and extend it to the current situation.

4) Codelook correlation model - algorithms have been developed to correlate events that are generated in n/w s based on modelling of the network and behaviors of n/w components.

5) state transition graph model - This could be used as a stand-alone system or integrated with an NMS which HP openview and some other vendors have done.

6) Finite state machine model - The main claim of this process is that it is a passive testing system. it is assumed that an observer agent is present in each node and reports abnormality to a central point.
