Sr. No. Flooded evaporator Dry expansion evaporator
1. It has refrigerant liquid present all through its coil. They are usually only one-fourth to one-third filled with liquid refrigerant.
2. This evaporator is heavy due to large charge. This evaporator is light due to small charge.
3. It has higher efficiency due to wetted surface. It has lesser efficiency due to gas to gas heat transfer.
4. It is used only for large plants. It is used for domestic applications.
5. Vapour from evaporator is in saturated condition since evaporator is filled with liquid refrigerant. Vapour is superheated to some extent.
6. Liquid refrigerant trapped in accumulator is re-circulated through evaporator. Refrigerant does not recirculate within evaporator.
