Determine .

Single plate clutch transmits 25 kW at 900 rpm. The maximum pressure intensity between the plates is $85kN/m^2$. The outer diameter of the plate is 360mm. Both the sides of the plate are effective and the coefficient of friction is 0.25. Determine (i) inner diameter of the plate, and axial force to engage the clutch.

$µ = 0.25 \\ Pi = 85KN/m^2 \\ Ro = 0.18m$

$P = Tω \\ 25 \times 10^3 = T × (2 \times π \times 900)/60 \\ T = 265.26 N-m$

  1. $T = μF/2[Ro+Ri] \times n \\ 265.26 = u/2 [2 \times πPiRi(Ro-Ri)][Ro+Ri] \times n \\ 265.26 = 0.25 \times π \times 85 \times 10^3 \times Ri[0.18-Ri][0.18+Ri] \times 2 \\ Ri = [(0.18)^2- (Ri)^2] \\ 0.001987 \\ or, \\ 0.0324Ri-Ri^3 = 0.001987 \\ \therefore, Ri = 0.1315 or, 131.5mm$

  2. $F = 2 \times πPiRi(Ro-Ri) \times n \\ = 2 \times π \times 85000 \times 0.1315 (0.18 – 0.1315) \times 2 \\ =6812 \\ F = 6.8 KN$
