Shaper Machine Planer Machine
In a shaper machine work is held stationary and the cutting tool on the ram is moved back and forth across the work. In a planar machine, the tool is stationary and work piece travels back and forth under the tool.
In a shaper machine, cutting takes place by moving the cutting tool over the job. In a planar machine, cutting takes place by reciprocating the work under the tool.
A shaper is a light-duty machine. A planer is a heavy-duty machine.
A shaper is less rigid and less robust. A planer can give more accuracy on machined surfaces.
Indexed feed is given to the work during the ideal stroke of the ram. Indexed feed is given to the tool during the idle stroke of the work table.
Shaper uses one cutting tool at a time. Planer uses several tools to cut simultaneously.
The stroke length can be adjustable. Stroke length can be adjusted.
Shaper is used quick return mechanism to drive the ram. In modern machine hydraulic drive is also used. Planer is driven by gear or hydraulic arrangement.
A shaper requires less floor area. A planer requires more floor area.
