Internal grinders are used to finish straight, tapered or formed holes to the correct size, shape and finish. The depth of depends on the diameter of the hole being ground and may vary from 0.02 to 0.05 mm in roughing operation and from 0.02 to .01m in finishing operations. Most internal grinders are horizontal except a few ones which are vertical.

There are three basic types of internal grinders:

  1. Centreless grinders
  2. Chucking Grinders
  3. Planetary grinders.

Centreless grinders

The external grinding principle is also applied to the internal grinding. In internal centreless grinding the work piece is supported by three rolls. One is the regulating roll, and the other is pressure roll to hold the work piece firmly against the support and the regulating rolls. This is illustrated in the diagram below.

The grinding wheel contacts the inside diameter of the work piece directly opposite the regulating roll, thus assuring a part of absolutely uniform thickness and concentricity. The pressure roll is mounted to swing aside to permit loading and unloading.
