Jetties:

  • It is the piled projected structure built out from the shore to deep water to receive the ships. Jetties can be constructed in the sea or for a navigable river. Jetty structure is used to berth the vessels alongside and affording the a working platform.
  • If piled projection structure is built parallel to the shore, then it is sometimes called as jetty-wharf
  • In case of rivers, waves current is diverted away from the rivers by jetties and the scouring action is prevented and navigation is also controlled due to diversion of current to deep waters.
  • In case of sea, jetties are built at the entrance of harbor so as to prevent the littoral drift and it is also constructed at a places where sea is remain shallow for long distance. In this way, jetties structure is extended from the shore to the deep water of sea so as to receive the ships.
  • Jetty is a narrow structure projecting from the shore into the deep water with berths on one or both sides and sometimes at the ends of jetty also.

Wharf:

  • The platform or landing places constructed near for vessels to berth is termed as wharves or wharf. It can be also defined as a wall construction along a shore or bank to berth the vessels for working is termed as wharf
  • Wharf provides a working platform alongside the ship in continuity of the shore. Actually a wharf is a quay, however the term wharf used for an open structures of posts or piles provided with jutting and bracings.
  • Wharves can be either built parallel to the shore or it can be projected into the water at right angle or oblique angle to the shore. The level of wharf must be above the high water level however when the water level is low, that time it should be economical to lead the vessels.
  • Wharf should be well braced and bolted because sometimes it may be subjected to an impact from any vessel. Wharves are provided with rounded corners which is further used for large vessels. Proper construction of wharves provides a smooth entry of vessels into the ships.
