Geotextiles as Separators:

Geotextiles are commonly used as separators between two layers of soils having a large difference in particular size to prevent migration of small size particular into the voids of large size particles.

The main use of separators is in the construction of highways on clayey soils.

Geotextiles as Filter:

Geotextiles can be used as filters instead of conventional filters. When the slit- laden turbid water passes through the Geotextiles, the suit particles are prevented from movement by the Geotextiles.

The figure shows the use of Geotextiles as filter on the upstream and downstream of the core of a zoned earth dam.

It prevents the migration of the particles of the core into the soils.

Geotextiles as Drain:

A drain is used to convey water safely from one place to theother.

As the Geotextiles are pervious, they themselves function as a drain.

They have a relatively higher water-carying capacity as compared to that of surrounding soil.

Drainage occurs either perpendicular to the plane of the sheet or in plane of the sheet.

Geotextiles as Reinforcement for Strengthening Soil:

Geotextiles have high tensile strength.

These can be used to increase the load-carrying capacity of soil.

They are used as reinforcement in the soil, which is poor in tension but good in compression.

The Geotextiles have been used in the contruction of unpaved roads over the soft soils.

Theses are laid over the soil and the base course of the road is places directly over it.

Geotextiles used as Reinforcement in retaining walls:

Geotextiles are used to form the facing of the retaining wall as well as reinforcement.

Such retaining walls are also called as fabric reinforcement walls
