Grit, Grade And Structure Of A Grinding Wheel

GRIT

Grit number indicate the size of the abrasive grains used making a grinding wheel. The grain sizes ranging fro coarse to very fine which are used in the manufacturing grinding wheels. The coarse wheels are used for f removal of material and fine grained wheel are us where finish is an important.

Coarse wheels are used for soft, ductile material, but fine grain wheel used to grind hard and brittle material

Турe of grit Grain size of grit No.
Coarse 8  10  14  16    20        24
Medium 30 36  46  54     60
Fine 80 100 120 150 180
Very fine 220 240 320 400 500  600

Grade

The grade indicates the strength and hardness of the bond in the wheel. The grade divided into three category.

Soft A B C D E F G  H
Medium I J K L M N O P
Hard Q R S T U V W X Y Z

Structure

The structure denotes the spacing between the abrasive grains. The structure of grinding wheel depends on the hardness of the material being cut. Soft, ductile material and heavy cuts require an open structure whereas brittle material and finishing cut require a dense structure.
