ADSL: Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a type of broadband communications technology to transmit digital data at a high bandwidth on existing phone lines to homes and businesses.

Cable: Cable internet runs on the same copper coaxial cable lines that deliver cable TV to your house, so it’s available in most areas that support cable TV service. A cable internet modem usually delivers faster internet than ADSL.

In order to determine which is better DSL or cable, first we need to compare both using different parameters.

Therefore Comparison of ADSL and Cable Network are as follows:

- Structure:

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) exclusively uses your local phone line to transfer data and connect you to the internet. While,

Cable internet runs on a shared network, which can cause low performance and lag time during peak internet traffic times.

  • Speed: ADSL provides maximum speed of 200 Mbps. While,

Cable provide much high speed connection than ADSL which is speed up to 1.2 Gbps.

  • Internet Service Provider(ISP): In ADSL subscribers can choose their own Internet service providers (ISPs). While,

Cable users cannot choose their own internet providers.

  • Performance & Scalability: In ADSL networks each user has a dedicated connection. If the number of users increases in the system, it does not have much impact on the existing users. While,

Cable lines are shared among users and so if more users are logged on, the performance decreases. This renders the cable system less scalable.

  • Cost: ADSL is cheaper than Cable Network. While,

Cable Network is costlier than DSL.

Conclusion: Between ADSL and Cable no one is superior both are equally better in a way. Cable modem offers high-speed services as compared to ADSL modem, but ADSL modem provides a security mechanism to the user which cable modem does not provide. In cable modem, bandwidth is shared among the users which degrade transmission speed when a large number of users are accessing services simultaneously. While ADSL and cable might be satisfactory for smaller or cost-conscience businesses.
