The difference is as follows:
| Sr. No. | Case Hardening | Surface Hardening |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Case hardening is a process of making hard case over metal by infusion of element over surface forming hard layer | Surface Hardening is a process of increasing hardness of surface keeping the core soft. |
| 2 | Done by heating to red hot condition, then infusing carbon on surface and then quenching in water bath. | Done by heating the surface at austinizing temperature and core below it and immediate cooling it by quenching. |
| 3 | Used for low carbon steel like mild steel. | Used for many equipment made of steel. |
| 4 | Does not required immediate quenching. | Requires immediate quenching. |
