Axial flow compressors are rotary flow compressors which have a lower pressure ratio per stage at higher mass flow rates compared to centrifugal compressor. The higher mass flow rate produces a higher thrust. Due to the multiple stages a greater pressure ratio is obtained. This makes it better suited to applications where the thrust of the engine itself is the motive force for the aircraft. Secondly, axial compressors have a low weight to power ratio. This makes it much lighter and efficient with a high discharge rate of gas. Thus, axial flow compressors are suitable and are widely used in jets.
