  • A Communication channel provides the connection between the transmitter and receiver.

  • Different types of channels are as follows:

    1.Wireline channels:

    • These channels use the pair of wires that carry the signal in the electrical form.

    • The Wireline channels are used for the transmission of voice as well as data information.

    • The Wireline channels include twisted pair wire lines and coaxial cables. Together they are called as guided electromagnetic channel.

    • E.g.: The telephone network

    2.Fibre optic channels:

    • The information which is to be transmitted is converted into light and then passed to the optical fibre channel which is then passed to the receiver.

    • At the receiver the light is converted back to signal by means of an optical detector.

    • Eg: Optical fibres are now used in the telephone systems,LANs.

    • In the fig: The light source used in transmitter is either an LED or LASER

    • Optical detector detects the light intensity.

  1. Wireless Electromagnetic channels:

  2. In radio communication systems, the transmitter radiates its output in the form of electromagnetic waves using transmitting antenna.

  3. These waves travel towards the receiver through free air which acts as a communication channel.

  1. Underwater Acoustic channels:

    • The underwater communication is required when oceans are being explored.
  2. The data collected by the sensors placed underwater should be transmitted first to the surface and then to the data collection center.

  3. Storage channels:

    • The magnetic tapes, digital audio, video tapes, magnetic disks are used for storing large amount of computer data.

    • Optical disks are used for storing the computer data, music and video information.

    • All these data storing systems can be characterised as Storage channels.
