Higher the binding energy per nucleon, higher is the stability. Most stable elements are in the intermediate mass number range. If elements of low mass number are fused together they lead to elements of greater stability while elements of higher mass number when fissioned together lead to elements of less mass number hence more stability. Nuclei of the even-even type have even no. of neutrons and protons, are very stable.
