Condition of equilibrium

a)stable equilibrium

b)unstable equilibrium

c)neutral equilibrium

a)stable equilibrium:

If a small angular displacement of body sets up a couple which opposes the angular displacement of the body and bring back the body to its original position.

b)unstable equilibrium

If a small angular displacement of body sets up a couple which tends to further increase in angular displacement of the body, results in unstable equilibrium.

c)neutral equilibrium

If a small angular displacement of body does not set up a couple and the body adopts new position given by angular displacement.

Consider an air balloon heavier at bottom,

For equilibrium, W=F$_{B}$

If a balloon is displaced in anticlockwise direction (fig (b)), then W and F$_{B}$ sets up a couple in anticlockwise direction to bring the balloon in original position.

Equilibrium For submerged bodies For floating bodies
a) stable When W=$F_{B}$ and point B is above G When W=$F_{B}$ and point M is above G
b) unstable When W=$F_{B}$ and point B is below G When W=$F_{B}$ and point M is below G
c) neutral When W=$F_{B}$ and point B and G at the same point When W=$F_{B}$ and point M and G at the same point
