• Cranes have wide application in construction projects, industries and in shipping etc.
  • These are used for lifting the loads and placing them at the desired location.
  • For this purpose the cranes have three motions in general, namely hoisting i.e lowering, derricking and slewing.
  • The cranes are generally electrically operated, diesel operated or may have diesel-electric drive.
  • The cranes are very much useful to pick up a load at one point and be able to deposit it at another point within a restricted area.
  • These are used for loads that are heavy for other types of equipment's.
  • Each type of crane is designed and manufactured to work economically in specific site situations.
  • Construction cranes are generally classified into two major families namely Mobile Cranes and Tower Cranes.

The cranes can be classified in following cases:

1. Derrick cranes.
2. Mobile cranes
3. Hydraulic cranes.
4. Overhead cranes also known as Gantry cranes.
5. Traveller cranes.
6. Tower cranes.
