Orthogonal cutting :

enter image description here

  • Cutting edge of tool is normal to cutting velocity direction.

  • The direction of chip flow velocity is perpendicular to the edge of tool

  • Cutting edge is longer than the width of the cut.

  • orthogonal type of cutting is called 2 - dimensional cutting.

  • In this type of cutting, tool life is less.

Oblique cutting :

enter image description here

  • Cutting edge of tool is inclined at acute angle to cutting velocity direction.

  • The direction of chip how velocity is at an angle with normal to cutting edge of tool.

  • Cutting edge may or may not longer than width of cut.

  • Oblique cutting is called 3 - dimensional cutting.

  • More tool life.
