The term network management can be defined as, The act of initializing , monitoring and modifying the operations of the primary network functions.

Primary functions are the one which can be directly apply to satisfy the users requirement directly.Primary functions are responsible for network access and data exchange mechanism by the user.

A network management system (NMS) is used to design, organize, analyze and administer computer and telecommunication network in order to maintain a desired level of service at all the times.Below figure shows, position of network management system.

The network management typically helps to active following features in a given network systems,

Security: To ensure that the network is not used by unauthorised users.

Performance: The good network performance will be achieved when we remove the different bottlenecks.

Reliability: Network management will ensure the network access and data exchange as well as hardware and software response is at optimum level.
