Refuse Derived Fuel

1. When the solid waste contains large amount of combustible matter as in industrialized countries it can be used as a fuel.
2. The combustible portion is segregated from the solid waste. The particle size of the material is reduced either prior to segregation or after the segregation.
3. The recovered combustible portion is commonly termed as a refuse derived fuel. This normally used as a fuel in thermal power plants and for boilers in other industries.
4. Prepared RDF typically in a powdered form can be fired directly in large industrial boilers that are now used for the production of power with pulverized coal or oil.
5. RDF also can be fired in conjunction with coal or oil. Although the process is not well established with coal, it appears that about 15 to 20 percent of the heat input can be prepared from with solid waste.
6. Depending on the degree of processing, suspension, spreader-stoker and double-vortex firing systems have been used.
7. Densified RDF fuel is prepared using a modified agricultural cubing machine. The resulting fuel cubes are suitable for use in a variety of thermal conversion processes including incineration, gasification and pyrolysis.
