An organization needs to have a reference set of measurable attributes and corresponding metrics that can be applied at various stages during the course of execution of an organization-wide testing strategy.
The attributes to be measured depend on the following factors:
Therefore, we discuss measurable attributes for software testing and the corresponding metrics based on the attribute categorization done by Wasif Afzal and Richard Torkar, as shown in below table These attributes are discussed in the subsequent sections.
| Progress | Attributes to be Measured |
|---|---|
| Progress | $\cdot$ Scope of Testing $\cdot$ Test Progess $\cdot$ Defect backlog $\cdot$ Staff Productivity $\cdot$ Suspension criteria $\cdot$ Exit Criteria |
| Cost | $\cdot$ Testing Cost estimation $\cdot$ Duration of Testing $\cdot$ Resource Requirements $\cdot$ Training needs of testing group and tool requirement $\cdot$ Cost effectiveness of automated tool |
| Quality | $\cdot$ Effectiveness of test cases $\cdot$ Effectiveness of smoke tests $\cdot$ Quality of test plan $\cdot$ Test Completeness |
| Size | $\cdot$ Estimation of test cases $\cdot$ Number of regression tests $\cdot$ Tests to automate |
