Additives in blended oil:
The Following Table shows the substances/compounds commonly used to improve the properties of the lubricants i.e. of blend, [including EPT additives]
| Property to be improved | Additives Substances/Compounds | Improvement |
|---|---|---|
| Oxidation stability | Aromatic amine, phenols, organic sulphides/ phosphides etc. | They retard oxidation of oil, hut they themselves get oxidized preferentially, e.g. in internal combustion engines where lubricants tend to get oxidised. |
| Corrosion / Abrasion stability. | Organic compounds of phosphorous or antimony. | They form a layer between the sliding surfaces thereby not allowing contact between the surfaces. |
| Viscosity index improvers. | High molecular weight organic compounds e.g. haxanol. | Viscosity stabilises |
| Viscosity improvers. | Polystyrene, Polyesters etc. | They act as thickeners. |
| Oiliness carriers | Vegetable oils, fatty acids / amines. | |
| Rust inhibitors | Fatty acids, Aminophosphates. | Rusting is controlled. |
| Antiwear additives | Substances liketricresylphosphate, Zn-dialkyl di thiophosphate. | Wear of machines is controlled. |
