  1. Supplementary services include short messaging service (SMS) which allows GSM subscribers and base station to transmit alphanumeric pages of limited length (160 7bit ASCII characters) while simultaneously carrying normal voice traffic.
  2. It is a store and forward way of transmitting message to and from the mobiles. The message from the sending mobile is stored in a central short message centre which then forwards it to the destination mobile. Thus in the case the recipient is not available the short message is stored and can be sent later.
  3. An interesting feature of SMS is return receipts. This means that the sender if wishes can get a small message notifying if the short message was delivered to the intended recipient.
  4. SMS provides cell broadcast which allows GSM base station to repetitively transmit ASCII messages with as many as fifteen 93 character strings in concatenated fashion.
  5. SMS can be used for safety and advisory applications such as the broadcast of highway or weather information to all GSM subscribers within reception range.
  6. SMS supports national and international roaming. Thus one can send short message to any other GSM mobile user around the world. GSM, CDMA, TDMA technologies support SMS.SMS is universal mobile data service
